Default Windshield question

Ok, so I have an 03 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. The windshield that was on the bike when I bought it just isn't cutting it for me. It is a tall, clear shield, and I find myself looking through the top 1" of it. I sit up and can see over it, but when I am in my "riding" position, it is too tall.

There is no "flare" at the top of the windshield, it is just straight up. I know that I should be sitting comfortably in my riding position and the top should come between my upper lip and nose. I am thinking a smoked shield with the flare (deflector) at the top would be the way to go. Does the shield height still follow the same guidelines when looking for one of those vs a regular shield?

If you want a DIY no cost/cheap option try the following:
  • Cover the top third of the outside of the windshield with masking tape
  • trace the shape of your windshield on some construction paper or cardboard and cut the shape of the windshield out of it.
  • Take the cardboard and trace the shape of the cutout down about two inches from the top of the windshield on the masking tape.
  • Use a sabre saw and cut on the line you just traced.
  • Use a file to "draw file" the edge to bring the rough cut into shape.
  • Block sand the edge with wet sand paper using 180, 400, and finally 600 grit sand paper.
  • Pull the tape off and wash the bike. It will look just like the one you have but two inches shorter.

A “plastic” cutting wheel in a rotary tool (Dremel), leaves a nice smooth cut, very little sanding needed.

With a "recurve" style shield, you can go with a shorter height and still have the same wind protection.
So many options out there it can make your head spin, and lots of riders go through multiple shields before they find the "perfect one" for them.

Here is what I am using, and I am very happy with it.
10" LRS medium tint.
I had the 12" version before, but didn't like it as much as this 10" one.

12"

10"

👆🏼 This. I run 10” clear recurve from Long Ride Shields and it works for me. I’m 5’ 11” with a 34” inseam so I sit tall and see over it just fine.

Thanks folks! I ordered a recurve 8" to start somewhere. It gave me a place to start.

I think you will like it. That is a Klockwerks 8 you see in my signature pic, I love it! It takes a few to get what you like. I have a 10" clear that I run on our long cold weather trips.

I had a 6” LRS recurve shield on a previous bike and I loved it - it work great!

Recently I tried a couple wicked cheap recurved shield options from eBay - literally - $20 each - acrylic or abs plastic, I can’t recall, to figure out what height I like the best on my current bike - currently running a 4-1/2” dark tinted shield and I love the height - the recurve style does what I need it to do, while giving me a completely open unobstructed view - but I have a 7” on the shelf to try

LRS, Freedom, Klockwerks, and other similar quality shields will serve you, once you select the height best for you.

I’ve cut down three different windshields using a Dremel tool and the template mentioned above. All have turned out great. It takes about an hour to complete including sanding.
