2002 ultra 47k, just wanted input to see if this is low oil pressure, seems a little low to me it is cruising at 60 miles an hour about 2800 RPMs. Previous owner said tensioner‘s were done haven’t verified though
Usual rule of thumb for oil pressure, is 10 PSI, per 1,000 RPMs. The oil pressure switch has a relief cut off ,which is around 35 psi. The engine by design doesn't need more than that. My bikes would have 30-32 psi at 65-70 mph. Hot idle, lowest it would go was 5-10 psi. I wouldn't worry about it.,,,
Asked the same question about my 2006 Street Glide to my indie and he confirmed the oil pressure gauge is just eye candy. About as accurate as a shotgun.
On my ‘04, it would read that low sometimes but I could wiggle the wires at the sending unit and it would jump up over 30. Changes out the sending unit and it stays above 30 when riding.
Before I changed to the Screaming Eagle Hydraulic Cam Plate with new high-volume oil pump, my idle oil pressure would drop to around 5 psi. With the new Cam Plate and upgraded oil pump, it’s now around 30-32 psi running down the road and still only around 10 psi at idle. Completely normal as mentioned by others. Volume and not pressure is the most important parameter.
Oil Pressure ok, my best suggestion is replace those cam chain tensioners ASAP! My 03 RK is in the middle of a CC upgrade. Inspected late at 31k a wee bit of pad remaining. That is one item that needs your FULL ATTENION NOW! Good luck.
Yep sound advice, when I bought my 06 SG a couple months ago the first weekend I pulled the cam cover and checked the tensioner shoes. They were only about 1/3 worn, so I am good for another couple years, then I will upgrade to Cyco tensioners at minimum.
