There's a lot of variables including what year your bike is.
My 2019 FLHT came stock with a beefy 160,biggest tire I could squeeze on my old 2000 was a 140 which came stock with a 130.
Then there's weight of the rider, riding two up and or loaded heavy a lot or not, road conditions where you ride the most and temperatures.
I had to replace the rear on my '19 at 2000 miles due to damage then just replaced both at 18,000 miles.
Last summer's heat wave here didn't help,Portland saw a record setting 115 degrees,I came home to that after a 3700 mile trip to Arizona and back so a lot of hot weather loaded two up.
On my last bike I got good wear and exceptional handling from Metzeler 888's so I just put a set on the '19,only a few miles so far but I'm liking them a lot and they haven't been noisey like some in the past. In fact less noise than the OEM Dungflops so far .

I appreciate all the replies. I was curious about when I should start thinking replacing them and your answers helped greatly so again, thank you all.

That might have been me lol This tire had 10,200 miles on it and really needed to come off but I also really needed to get home too.

on my 08 Ultra usually get 12k-ish on OEM rear. Front is usually more but often just replace in pairs lately.

Had an awful experience w/ Continental Conti-tours I mounted last Aug, rear was showing cord around 5900 miles. Never have had that happen on any bike I've ever owned, touring or otherwise.

I've got 10,600 mi on the set of AE's (normal avg) and down to 3/32. Not finding the front anywhere but plan on replacing before fall trip.
Trying to avoid a flat,,
I don't know how you guys are getting so many miles on yours. Good on ya..

I know I'm a minority, but I just never understood the fascination with smoking, tire burnouts....

I cringe whenever I see them... either on a bike, or a car...

Other than for warming the tires prior to a drag race, I consider it "vehicle abuse".... It puts enormous, and useless, stress on the drivetrain... and I spend way too much on tires to waste the tread that way...

I just don't get it....

Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go yell at some kids to get off my lawn....

I made that reply as to being in the burnout pit in jest hattitude as I knew some would have a fit over someone riding on a tire that bad. I don't do burnouts however I have had to get on the breaks hard and had a friend riding behind say I kicked up a good patch of smoke.
I was waiting to get into a shop to have the new tire put on and had been checking the tire daily I can only guess a Lot of tread came off in short order as I could only see a small amount of inner tire however I was panicking on the 5-6 mile ride to the shop.

While I am replying to you I would just like to say even though I am new to this forum I have been reading it for a few years and your knowledge of all things bike related is highly valued very much appreciate reading your inputs, Thanks

You've just never tried it...

I certainly would not attempt it anymore, but I have burned down a few. It's just dumb fun while being young, don't overthink it.

Sorry if I came across as PO'd or condescending about burnouts.... I just never understood the attraction... guess they're a big "whatever" to me...

I always see pending $$$$$$, believing sooner or later something's gonna give..... Guess I'm kind of cheap in some ways....

I do know a little bit about "dumb fun".... When I get together with old friends, stories start being told, and I often cringe / turn red with embarrassment when my "stories" get told.... I'm not about to share them on a public forum......

Sometimes I wonder how I lived this long.....
