Default fuel filters

Just wondered what the consensus is on changing fuel filers. I have 34k miles. Maybe my paranoia but experience with diesels is they are critical to save big bills. I know petrol not so critical but they use pretty pissy filters! 2012 RK

Most all modern gas stations have a filter on the pump. If your Harley idles, it's fine. The idle will be the first to go with a bad filter.

I do all my maintenance. Only thing I have put a fuel filter on in years is my Jeep. It has 320,000 on it.

Now if you fill up your bike, boat or power tools from a rusty 5 gallon can sitting in the shed, that's different.

Also, that idle check applies to modern fuel injection. Not older 1990es system with stage pressure FI system and of course carburetors.

If you travel long distances, or it gives you warm fuzzy fillings, do it. It's not going to leave you setting but if you start to loose your idle and need to crack the throttle for idle, on a trip, it could get dangerous.

PS.. Make your next new post over in the new member area.. Just in case .

Welcome from North Beach, FL., USA!

Just in case you have not done this and only as a suggestion.

Add a Signature Line in your USER set up for your bike year, model, and all the letters that Harley recognizes it with so others see at the bottom of all your post. This enables others to know your exact model if you ever ask a question.

And an Avatar of your favorite shot in the USER set up for the small picture others will see in the top left corner of your post.

Your all set.... Enjoy the ride! ______________

I think its 30k in the owners manual...either way it's cheap enough to replace. I do the regulator, pump strainer, transfer tube, gasket while doing the filter. Even if it's working fine but say it's 50 percent clogged, then the pump has to work that much harder to maintain pressure. Pumps are expensive filters not so much.

Don't know about other models or years, but my owner's manual (2018 FLHCS) states to replace the fuel filter every 100,000 miles.

I don't have the time right now, perhaps someone would check the parts lists to see if the OP's fuel filter part number is the same as for the '18 mentioned above. If it is the same along with the sock, why not use the same replacement interval?

Are the rubber o-ring gaskets on the newer tanks reusable? I know some folks like to replace the gaskets no matter what, but I like to reuse things if there's no need to throw them in the landfill.

HD has the filters on backorder. As much as I like the aftermarket, the ones on Amazon look sketchy...waiting for Surdyke to deliver!

I got 4 of them from Surdyke yesterday. Ordered them two weeks ago.
