We are headed out from NE. to MI. and going to be riding the Upper Peninusula of Michigan. Is there definite roads or highways that I need to ride? Otherwise we are going to follow the senic road that is highlighted in the HOG atlas.
Haven't been up there in years - since 1975 or 76. There is a bar in Grand Marais you might want to look into - it's on 77 north of 28. It was a great big place made out of logs. Would love to step into that place again.
Also, be aware that they have a fire in that part of the state and I don't know how well it's contained or how much it will curtail any travel plans. Good luck..!!
I would strongly suggest that you explore the Keweenaw Peninsula (all the way at the top of the U. P.) as much as time allows. US 41 and M-26 (which form a loop with M-26 following Lake Superior) is outstanding, as is Brockway Mountain Drive. You have a great view from up there. There don't seem to be any bad roads in the Keweenaw.
Second that on Brockway drive!.... what a fantastic view! Rode there last year. Also check out Sault St. Marie, Whitefish Point, and the Tahquamenon Falls on the way to Houghton/Calumet in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Just came back from Superior Circle tour last week. Like Cookiemech sez, check out Copper Harbour MI. Twisties on the way in (and out toward Eagle Harbour) are fantastic partially thanks to new blacktop. The Keweenaw definitely worth checking out, fuel up B4 too long up the thumb to avoid heavy gouging. Be certain to check out Hilltop Restaurant in L'Ense just east of peninsula, that is if you like to eat.
Copper Harbor in the Kee, Lake of the Clouds, Gogebic, forest up through Munising to Marquette and then up to Big Bay. Silver Mountain, in the Sturgeion River Gorge, is worth seeing, although access is a bit challenging during the summer months.
The forest road from Gogebic north through the Porkies to Lake of the Clouds is fantastic. Water falls in Presque Isle, Bond Falls, & Crystal Falls worth seeing. Guess it really depends on how much time you have. There is really a lot to see up there.
I've been all over the U.P. snowmobiling, feels like I've covered every inch of it! Absolutely beautiful country that's for sure. Tons of great bars and food stops in every town too.
Just rode threw the UPtwice in the last couple of weeks coming and going to Sturgis. Seems to me all the roads where excelent. From what I've seen on TV the fire is near Newberry.
