Default Help a newbie brother out

Ok guys, I have a question, and forgive my ignorance because I am a newbie to the motorcycling community and have no idea what I'm doing. I got my first HD about two months ago, a 2006 HD Street Glide. It has the 88 on it, nothing done to it at all to my knowledge except it currently has rineheart slip ons, but other than that completely factory engine. I've been talking to a buddy of mine at work who knows quite a bit more than me, and now he has me interested in doing some upgrade work on my bike. I'm wanting to initially do a stage 1 upgrade, possibly stage 2 or 3 later. Everything I've been researching says for a stage 1 just need a good 2 to 1 exhaust, big sucker type aftermarket air breather, and some type of onboard tuner. I have chosen to go with a 2 brothers racing 2 to 1 exhaust (my work buddy recommended), an arlen ness breather, and a power commander 6 dyno jet tuner. However, here is my question. My buddy mentioned something to me about changing out the throttle body as well when I change out the breather to my arlen ness to make more use of the extra air i will be pulling in. I am so confused though because I cannot find any good material on whether it is worth it or not, what exactly my stock TB is, and whether I can or should put a bigger TB on my existing 88. I'm thinking later I want to upgrade my jugs to the S&S 98" kit, but this would be later after I do a stage 2 upgrade and install new cams. So, I guess my question is, should I change out my throttle body when putting all the parts I've chosen for my stage 1, can I even upgrade my TB, would it even be worth it on the 88, and/or is all I need for the stage 1 what I've picked out so far? Like I said guys, complete newb, so forgive my ignorance. Just want to put some extra pep in my bikes step. Thanks.

No need to change out the TB til you add more displacement than 110”, swap out the cam for higher lift version and swap in high compression/ported cylinder heads. Stock TB will do just fine with your stage1/2 upgrades.

Default Thanks Matt_eglide

Thanks man. That’s what it was sounding like to me reading everything I read. But wasn’t sure this being my first bike and all and first time I’ll have ever upgraded a bike. I’m looking forward to getting it upgraded and see how she runs afterwards.

Don’t do anything till you put a few thousand miles on the bike and gain some experience in the saddle. Then think about what you want to change on the bike. It’s never about what other people do to their bikes, it’s about improving something that bugs you.

+1 on what kojak and yellowbird said. If you are new to it, why not just ride it and enjoy it for a while.

You have a great friend. He is certainly willing to spend your money

I would be more worried about brakes, tires and cam chain tensioner at this point. Like above. Learn your bike… then know what “you” want to do.

I am new to Harleys, but not to motorcycling, having ridden for several decades. I bought a 2014 FLHXS a month ago or so. Like you I think it needs a bit more "pep". I have put about 1K miles on it, mostly up and down the canyons near me. After having trouble negotiating the twisties, I decided the bike needs to have a suspension upgrade before more power. (Yes I checked the new tires' air pressure, and yes I understand the techniques of riding mountain roads). New rear shocks and an updated front end are on order. Of course as always, YMMV.

Good luck in your build. Personalizing our rides is much of the fun of owning motorcycles.
