I did both my 2007 Ultras at 2,000 miles, the first new 2007 Ultra broke the crank after 9 1/2 months and 30,000 miles, I hope the oil had nothing to do with it!! LOL"
I put 2,000 miles on the new one in1 week then did the change!
Do it anytime you want to. Some of the major brand cars as well as the CVO bikes from Harley come as a factory fill in them like corvette, benz and others. Why wait when you can get better protection . Eveything will seat fine with synthetic oil too.
Oil discussion is like religion and politics... it can get nasty.
Any good NAME brand should work. I've trusted Mobil 1 on my little Ninja and the motor is like new.
Syn 3 isn't bad to start with and like someone else above says, go from there. I'm on Redline at the moment, and wow as far as the tranny is concerned it is really smooth. I used the HD stuff before, no real complaints, but the Syn stuff is just for a little peace of mind.
I also did mine at the 1000 service. Dealer recommended it & I went with the suggestion. I'm in the auto repair business & have been reading where the syn will last longer than the other stuff so don't plan on changing until end of the season. Yup it snows in Canada so the riding season is shorter for us.
I was going to change at the 1000 mile service. I was going to put in Redline 20W50, then I read the bottle, and they said to wait till the 3000 mile mark, so I did.
Approaching 1000 mile service. Should I switch to synthetic or wait till 2500- 5000 miles ??
Royal Purple says wait 'til 3.5k, IIRC, and someone reported here that Redline recommends 3k. I waited 'til 2k, but in modern engines where a good break-in procedure is used the rings should seat within 50 miles. If they don't, they probably will never seat. I think 1-3k is a prudent interval, up to 5k if you're paranoid.
I believe you are correct that HD ships them from the factory with synthetic. I know that was what was recommended by the dealer when I took my 06 Road King in for the 1K service and I have used synthetic in all 3 holes ever since without any problems. I currently have about 15,500 miles on it and the level never drops between the 5K service. If anything I think that it would help prevent glazing on the cylinder walls during break-in.
