I agree with you that for the actual foot print/ square footage a bike takes up is less when standing straight up on a stand. But it comes down to the space around the bike being wasted due to other constraints, like how close I can get my bike to the wall on a stand vs on the jiffy stand leaning toward the wall.

I actually have a wheel chock stand and, I can and have tried to store my bike standing straight up. Doesn’t work for my situation and ended up taking up more space due having to pull straight in to the chock it left the rear end of my bike too far away frame the wall and made it impossible to walk between the bike and vehicle in the garage. With how I park currently, backing into garage I get my rear tire touching the wall (concrete walls in my garage) and turned full lock left I can scoot my front end close to the wall until my clutch lever almost touches the wall. And that keeps the walk way between bike and vehicle open since the bike leans toward the wall. And leaning the bike also has the effect of making my crash bar a little shorter since it’s no longer parallel to the ground and doesn’t stick out as far from the wall as it does when the bike is standing straight up. Now I know if I had a true center stand I could get the bike closer to the wall but that’s a PITA to do every time I want to get my bike out to ride, mean while with how I store now I can take off from where it’s parked and not have to dick with a stand at all to get it out, and I can back it right into its spot and lean it over with no fuss. So for me a lot of it comes down to taking up the least space and still being practical. But I also store it the same way.

Actually that's why, years ago I bought the J&S Jack (similar brands would also apply). I have a 2 car garage and needed to park my Ultra Limited parallel and closest to the back wall of my garage. Maneuvering (ie: wiggling) a 900lb Ultra Limited was predictably difficult and leaning it onto the Jiffy Stand ate up even more room.

Now all I do is ride into my garage, jack it up and roll it easily into position against the back wall with very little effort. The footprint of the jack is the same as the width of my UL with it's hard bags and handle bars.

Works for me

I have the Canadian tire special. As my bike is stuck in the garage for up to 6 months and at times -25C temps I like to have it up. Maybe it's not needed but it certainly doesn't hurt and makes the bike easier to maneuver into the back of the garage. You can also use the jack to do work on the bike. Upgrading my front suspension was easy.
