2007 the option required dealer to enable or disable. They would do it one time free. Good dealerships never changed to change it.

2008 came with TBW and you could change it any time you wanted yourself.

Until 2020 they shipped with it enabled.

But for some reason in 2020 they started shipping them wit it disabled. And dealership were discouraging it's use.

Because people who were needlessly afraid of it were taking up their time dealing with it.

On my older Silverado if you toggled screens to the one that shows the "Instant Economy" screen, for the active/current MPG as you drive, instead of the one that shows average MPG, on that screen along the top it showed "V8" and that would switch to "V4" as you were watching it if it shut the cylinders off, that was the only way to "see" when it was doing it.

That very system, back then called AFM (I think), just failed a month ago on mine... one of the "special" lifters collapsed (4 of the cylinders have different lifters than the others). Interestingly, on the highway I got better gas milage with AFM disabled (requires a module plugged into the OBDII port, from Range Technology), but on the highway mine didn't go into that mode hardly ever anyway, unless I'd let off the gas and kinda coasted, so to speak, for several seconds. So I now have a new GMC...
