yeah thats the issue I think as well.. I have the older style. The bad part is they make a kit with the turn/brake lights that work very easily on the back of the saddlebags, but i just dont think they look good at all. i know everyone has their own tastes and I am not knocking anyone who likes those, they are just not for me...
I have chrome fillers on my 07 that work with the factory surrounds.
They are not illuminated, but a bit of drilling, cutting, etc. could easily change that.
These are factory H-D fillers.
This set is actually being swapped out for a pair that are in better condition.
I really like the led's that mount on the rear of the saddle bags. their horizontal orientation matches the horizontal lights on the rear of my tour pack (2015).
I read the OP doesn't like the "look" of the horizontal saddle bad mounted lights....but I'd suggest they give them a try. At the very least position them with tape and see if you've soften to the idea of them.....they really do a great job of lighting up the rear end.
