I have been reading this great forum for some time now and have just now decided to join.
I just came back from Sturgis and noticed already on my way there some pinging and hesitation when accelerating hard from lower rpm. After riding for a while (2 hours +) it got better, but never totally went away. The mileage was somewhere between 40- 45 mpg. Also, after 500 miles, I noticed a big color difference inside the exhaust pipes. The left is dark brown (looks normal to me), the right is light to medium brown. Is it possible that the fuel injector of the front cylinder is fouled and therefore makes this cylinder run lean?
Difference in exaust color is due to 85% of exhaust goes out the right side on a stock harley header system, its basicly a two into one, sounds more like you got some bad or low octane fuel. Medium grey is a good burn color for exhaust, the darker the more rich its running, pull the plugs and see what they look like, a light brown or grey is what you want to see.
