I have an 07 Ultra and it has some random issues with idle and running.
Sometimes when it is idling it is rough as all get out! Like a bucking horse! I do NOT have the parade map and it will happen cold or hot.
Also it will run rough up to about 3300 rpms, not bad rough but just not quite right. I can ride but I feel lots of vibes from the engine. It feels like it is shuddering or clutch is slipping when accelerating and just generaly rough ride.
Sometimes it is smooth running and smoothidling with no reason for the change. It is random and cannot track it down to anything (hot or cold doesn't seem to matter)
It almost seems like the timing is off somehow, but will "fix" itself next time I ride...
when did u buy it? If before November 2006 they did have a remap of sorts (service bulletin) of the ECM. If after that date it should have been done at the factory.
Take it back to the dealer and have it looked at. It just doesn't sound normal.
Mine purrs like a kitten...(only have SE slip-ons)
i think i have the same issue with my 08...
i took it back to the dealer and told them it ran fine first start up in the morning, but after only a couple of miles it gets sluggish, and idles rough when holding in the brake..it has abs too...
when they put it on the computer, it was showing about 8-10 degrees on timing at idle, but after pulling in on the brake lever it started jumping up to 15 to 20 degrees advanced... they called the factory rep and they said it was normal... bullsh*t,,, i been around cars and bikes all my life and have never seen a condition that u want advanced timing at idle... that has to take away power... but not sure they are going to do anything about it...i think it is heat related too, seems as soon as it gets to about 300 degrees it does this.... don b
So let me get this straight.... your timing advanced when you pulled the brake lever.... and the dealer said that was normal. On top of that, you're getting oil temps consistently in the 300 degree range?
Something is not right and it needs to be looked at. If that is the only service you are going to get from that dealer you need to RUN (don't walk) away from there and find another dealer.
I got it early November (September build) and it has been updated with the 0903 torque smoothing map. I remember it being lots smoother before the torque smoothingmap though but it seemed to ping morethough. I just did my 5k service also. The rough enginehas been on going for before the 5k service. It has been rough most of the time and I thought that was just how it is but it has been very smooth on occassion so now I question the bucking idle and shuddering feel of it.
Sometimes smooth sometimes not but no check engine light or anything. I changed the plugs but that made no difference.
I asked my dealer about going back to the pre-service bulletin map and he said they would verify the map at my 5k and make sure everything is up to date. But I forgot to remind them about it during the service...lol
I do have the HD version of stage 1 (air cleaner and stage 1 map with stock pipes) Took off the Rush pipes and PCIII for the service to try to get some better low end torque and to make sure I keep my warranty. I like the better low end with stock pipes but hate the heat.
Sounds like it's fuel or sparkrelated.Either fuel filter, injectors, or ECM fuel management, or coil/wires/plugs. Have you checked your plugs to see how they look? Does it matter when you ride, i.e. is it rough when weather is hot or cold, wet or dry, etc.? Tough problem.
I'll take it in when I get my IDS and have them address it then. Have them check codes and I read here about them putting it on a computer so maybe I can get them to do that. I kinda got "snippy" with them last time about my bike so I will give them (and me ) a cooling off time. [&:]
Not sure about the weather affecting it. I'm down in south Texas and it is always humid and either raing or fixing to rain...lol Temps about 90+ most days. I put new plugs in about 500 miles ago to see if that helped but it did not change anything. The plugs with 4k on them seemed fine.
I had a 03 sporty 1200c and it had a rough spot in it at a certain rpm (about 65-70 mph) but if you rode above or below it it was OK (as far as a sporty could be). If you ever had a sporty then you can relate to the roughness I have when riding but this bike is rubber mounted so it is not as jarring as a sporty. It kinda smoothes out around 3300 rpm and I do not feel it so bad in the pegs/seat/grips.
It really feels like when a timing belt/chain slips one notch. But how would it "fix" itself and run smooth sometimes?
Is there someway to put a timing light/meter on this thing, something I could buy?
Or even take it to PEP Boys and have them check codes kinda thing?
What is IAC? Guess I need to get one of the "inexpensive" maintenance manuals......
