It is not uncommon for the compensator nut to loosen up. In fact, it happend to me about 2500 miles from home!

I'm sure I've heard of additional damage resulting.

There is a HD Service Bulletin regarding the nut coming loose. Do a forum (or Google) search on "compensator nut" or "compensator sprocket"...

Happened to a friends 04 Fatboy last year. A mechanic at the Cranbrook BC Harley dealer caught it before the crank got damaged.

A little off topic but a few months ago I had the clutch adjuting lock nut back off, fell down in the bottom of the primary. Long story short, service writer at a local dealer told me there is no way for a properly torqued fastener to come loose.

I think I disagree with that line of thinking.

We have yet (after a year) to see a compensator nut come loose on any model year bike. Must be very rare.

My '99 RKC had it come loose on the way home from Sturgis last year. Shimmed it, cleaned it, red locktighted the $h!t out of it.

I don't know how common it is, but it does happen.
