And once again because a small number of people can't get it through their thick skulls to exercise a little common decency, government is going to come in and regulate all of us.
Not that long ago I was eating at a table at a restaurant and their outdoor patio about 100 feet from the road. We'd hear plenty of bikes go by, some louder than others, some accelerating hard, some not. Then we hear this complete dick with straight pipes on a dyna just tear away from the stoplight with everything he had and the crackling was just deafening; we couldn't even hear each other talk, and he was at least 100 feet away.
Noise pollution is a real issue. Just like you would be pissed off if someone moved in downwind of your home and burned garbage and you had smoke pouring into your backyard all the time, at some point it's just as bad to be blaring stupid levels of noise onto someone else's property just because some guy thinks it's fun or makes his dick bigger, and that's what this is about.
Though to be honest I'd much rather hear loud pipes than have my teeth rattled at 2 in the morning by some wannabe gangsters' stereo subs rumbling by in their ricemobile.
God I'm glad I live in the boonies, the guy next door with the duelly diesel and 4" dumps ain't complainin' when I give the Evo a good warmup after it's sat for a few days nor the other one with the big old Farmall you can hear in town 5 mi away. I love it!
Unless your riding BACKWARDS most of your exhaust noise goes out the back! If you don't believe me stand next to a highway and check it out yourself. Loud pipes are loud to the people following you, not to the people in front of you.
this is complete hosrehockey, not 2 weeks ago i was driving down a road by us, speed limit was 55mph, i had my windows down enjoying a nice day and i could hear piped up bikes heading toward me from over 100ft away... and this was not in a residential area, it was near a bunch of trees and such... if you truly believe that then youve bought into their propoganda
How many cars do you see with their windows down (winter or summer)? Cars built today are sealed very well from outside noises. The "Loud pipes save lives" theory is simply weak and lacks logic. That said, I love to hear my pipes. What's lacking with some ********* is the ability to know where and when to crack the throttle. There are also thoses that just don't care about other people and their rights.
I run load pipes and I can't really say one way or another if they have saved my life. I really could care less if anyone else hears them --I do, and it is music to my ears. I also respect my nieghbors and community by not creating unnecessary decibles. The LEO's don't hassle me, 'cause I don't ask for it.
The other day on a ride one of the guys who was following , told me that my pipes were load, but sounded nice.He said he just followed at a distance that the sound was right for him and all was cool.
Whether loud pipes save lives or not doesn't mean jack s(&*. The fact is that people are getting tired of loud cars, bikes, lawn blowers, whatever else makes a loud noise. And they have a right to complain about it and they're doing it at the city halls and courthouses. The cops for the most part like bikers because many of them are bikers as well, but they are under pressure to do something about the noise.
I got pulled over the other afternoon and the lady cop said she owns a bike with loud pipes, but if citizens don't see the cops pulling over speeding and noisy bikes. they raise hell with the police department. She said the guys with straight pipes and loud mufflers have created such a ruckus that people are demanding that any bike that makes more than a putt is going to get a ticket. Get this. I have stock 05 mufflers. She let me go without a ticket but warned me that the town is cracking down big time and I need to ease off if I don't want to get hit with a big fine. The day is coming soon that they will require you to put quiet mufflers on your bike or risk a big fine or have the bike confiscated. Then we'll all sound like Honda Goldwings.
Thanks to all of the half-deaf, loud-piped jerks for creating this fiasco.

i won't completely disagree with this bobros, i personally can't stand the sound of straight pipes, they're loud and obnoxious and don't even sound that good (not to mention they usually hurt performance)... the sound insulation of cars is certainly a problem, but to say that it can't be heard just simply aint true... anything you can do to warn others of your presence is a benefit, sure it might be a low percentage of people that have their windows down, but at least that low percentage can hear ya... i certainly think that the biggest problem, as most have said, is the local assbags that insist on straight pipes and revving the motors in the driveways and blasting past homes at midnight... it has created a perception problem for bikers... imho, reasonable pipes and courteous riders are whats needed... police yourselves before the gubmint does it for ya... bikes are one of the last bastions of freedom (even though heavily regulated), i want to continue to have all the choices available to me and future generations...

I understand your reasoning, Empath, but it just ain't so. I've had several cars begin to change lanes when I was apparently in their blind spot, onlyto snap back to their lane when they hear me. I can even see car's react if I rev the engine as I pass them -- they move over more. I used to not be a believer, but I am now. I'm running Rinehart TD's with the quiet baffles, so I'm doing what I can to make things a little quieter both for me and those around me. I've had several bikers, and a couple of cars, tell me how good the bike sounds, so not sure it's too noisy. Anyway, JMHO.

Your horn was included on your bike for just these use's, A motorist will give a heads up quicker to a horn, because they know most times horns are not blown except for some sort of danger. The sound of a motor. is a common thing on the road. Watch yourself wake up next time somebody blows one at you.
