my other option is to not claim it on insurance and fix it myself with used Ebay parts. I'd probably have 1000-1500 in it doing that. Thoughts?
If the tab broke on the frame, the insurance will total as it requires a frame swap to repair. I went through it with my 09 in 2012. If you like the bike and can fix it without a huge expense that might be your best option.
Last night I pulled the crash bar off and bent the tab back. It wasn't broke just bent and ripped for about 1/4". I got the rip to line back up and ordered a used crash bar off ebay. I guess I'll wait till the crash bar is installed then take it in for an estimate on the other damage, maybe that will keep them from totaling it.
I have seen folks add damage to get a total, but never hide it. Wonder if that is still considered insurance fruad... maybe touch up the tear w/ HD black paint before installing new bar?
Fraud, noun

a. Heal up quick!!!!!
b. If I was adjusting this, I would not total it. The tab is an accessory tab, not a structural / securement tab
Thankfully the damage all looks bolt-on. And seriously, heal up quick and feel good.
ouch . Had a kid ride his bike out in from of me and got bucked off , BUT huge difference was I had all.my gear on and only screwed left pinkie and bruised left foot . 3000 dollars damage to Fat Bob which insurance covered along with my riding gear . Hope for a speedy recovery for you and your bike .
I am sure I am am speaking to the choir, I would not be putting that arm in the river or marina water, I had a bad bug bite on my foot, went boating and that night I had shooting pains in my foot for three days. Not sure if it was the water but just in case
Local hosptial here used to take what felt like a wire brush to roadrash to clean it up. We always felt they did it to teach bikers a leasson. I agree with wonkee to keep that out of any water with high levels of bacteria. Or set up an internal defese by drinling lots of good whisky!
Good luck and heal up, it sucks but it happens to many of us. The bike may not have been able to walk away but (you were) !
Many more bikes out there but only one of you. As for if the bike is totaled, I couldn't tell you, but I am sure glad you're not!
Stay safe and live to ride another day!
