If I leave the forks unlocked, anybody can start it. Is this normal? Is it possible to leave the forks unlocked and still lock the ignition so no one can start it. Is this what the key fob is for? If not, what exactly is the key fob for, and do I need one, and where exactly do I get one. Are they still available? Locking the forks works, but one of these days, I am going to park the bike some where on an angle where I can' lock the forks without having the bike fall over, so having the option to lock the ignition without turning the forks would be nice. This whole ignition key thing is so confusing. Somebody help me please.
Thanks for your post! Now I know what the FOB is for 👍

He has an electra glide. All it has is the lock on the forks which also locks the ignition.

Pull the plastic off the key and write the number down. You can use that to make more keys. It will come in handy if you loose your key. You can order matched keys.

As for a fob, that would depend if he had secruity, I don't think it was all that common back then, but some older bikes had it.

I have a 2002 with the security module. My Speedo has a red “key” shape light that blinks when I arm alarm. I don’t know if all the speedos had that light, or just the ones with alarm. Might be an easy way to check for alarm without having to remove body covers.

I only had 1 Fob, but bought a second. I was able to program both fobs (reprogrammed original) to work. Had to do both at same time. I was also able to program in a PIN, using the turn signal buttons, in case I lost fob or battery died, and set the alarm to auto arm 30 seconds after bike shut down. You might be able to do that if you don’t have a fob, but do have alarm system.

Glad to read your ignition switch is working properly... and you can now lock your bike...

Most likely, you do not have security..... BUT......

I know a couple people who have early Twin Cams with security and never use it. They don't even bring their FOBs with them, just the key. It is unlikely, but possible your prior owner was the same, and the FOB was lost..

To know for sure, you would have to check the part number on your TSM (Turn Signal Module, no security) or the TSSM (Turn Signal Security Module, with security). Your bike will have one or the other.. They both look the same... They have a label on them with the corresponding part number.

The domestic bike part numbers are:
TSM - #68920-01D
TSSM- #68922-00D

Your part number will be one of those two... The suffix letter at the end doesn't matter. They are both obsolete parts and are no longer available from the MoCo. You won't be able to add HD security to your bike if you don't already have it... unless you want to buy a used TSSM, or go aftermarket.

Here is a a pic of a TSM mentioned above I found on the internet, so you can see what it looks like and where the part number is located.

Don't know for sure on a 2002 Electra Glide, but on a 2012 Electra Glide the TSM/TSSM is under the right side cover, at the rear of that space, inboard the O2 sensor connectors. Since you don't have O2 sensors, your TSM/TSSM may be easily inspected in that same location.

If you luck out and have a TSSM, you could try to find a #68926-00 FOB on eBay or NOS at a dealer. The FOB is also an obsolete part no longer available from the MoCo

There is a procedure where you marry the FOB to the TSSM. Then you would be able to activate and deactivate the alarm...

Good luck...

His TSM may be under the seat. But it seems to vary by years a bit.

Do you have the owners manual? It should explain how your lock works. My ‘03 Ultra Classes had security and it had an icon that flashed when the alarm was on. It should explain how your display looks with and without security.

Okay, the last couple of post where very helpful. I think I got the ignition switch figured out. At first I thought you had to lock the forks in order to lock the ignition, which does work. But you don't have to lock the forks. You can leave your forks pointed straight ahead, and turn the ignition switch all the way to the left, and you can still lock the ignition without locking the forks. That is what I wanted to do in the first place, but I thought it only worked if you locked the forks. The manual wasn't too clear. It's all good now. Now I can concentrate on my next problem, the rear rocker box is leaking oil. I'll make another post about that soon. Thanks everyone that replied.

I've owned 1989,2000 and 2019 Electras and all were the same as this.
