Default Speedometer question

If this is in the wrong section I’m sorry. Over the weekend the speedometer on my wife’s 13 sg started actioning strange, while riding it will fluctuate speed. I took it for a ride and it will show 10 then jump 20 and read different. I was going down the road going about 40 and the speedo showed I was going 10 then back up to 40. It has Dakota digital gauges so I don’t think the gauge is the problem, also the cruise control symbol in the gauge doesn’t come on, the switch does light up though. I have done a little research but I think I confused myself, is it the vehicle speed sensor or the wheel speed sensor going bad? I’m just confused and hope some of you smart guys can point me in the right direction. I have the manual so will most likely replace it myself if I can figure out what I need to replace.

thanks

Most likely is the gauge.

Start with the simple/free things first.
1. Remove the speed sensor and clean it real good. coat connector with Dielectric grease (Available at auto parts stores)
2. Remove connectors to speedo and clean real good. Coat with Dielectric grease.
3. Find any other connectors leading up to the speedo and clean them real good and ensure they are snug when putting back together.

My 02 RK had the exact symptoms, was the speed sensor. I cleaned it first and that worked for just a little while, then it was done.
I bought a take-off from e-bay and fixed it.

On my years,I would start by cleaning sensor.

Not sure why you think after market can't go bad though

I did send an email to Dakota Digital so will see what they respond. Was it the sensor under the starter that you replaced?

Classic symptoms of a bad VSS are eratic speedo readings and the turn signals failing to self-cancel. Never hurts to remove it and clean it to see if that solves your issue.

The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is #21 in the below parts pic....

Another nod for the VSS. Vehicle Speed Sensor was the first thought I had reading your symptoms. Happened on my 11 Cross Bones. I cleaned it and it got better for a couple weeks, then stopped all together. I replaced it, problem solved.

Thanks guys, still waiting to hear back from Dakota digital. She rode yesterday and on her way to work the Speedo was acting up, on her way home she said no problems at all. Sounds like I will just replace the VSS and check to make sure the gauge didn’t work loose, guess I will check the gauge first.

Ok I get it's the VSS. How do you remove it without unbolting the starter? My starter sits right over the VSS on my '98 RKC.
