Sorry, I have nothing to offer for your specific year/model bike. I've never worked on a '98 RKC, so I've never seen the VSS on one.

I can only say I don't recall an issue dealing with the few VSS cleaning and/or replacements I've done. However, they were on Twin Cams.

Heard from Dakota Digital and they recommend testing the VSS before sending the gauge in. I’m thinking when I take it apart I might just replace the VSS instead of having to take the starter out twice. They did also say it is possible that a solder in the gauge could be getting weak. But I will take the fairing off first and make sure all connections are tight before I do anything else. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Question for you guys that replaced the VSS, was there a code stored for it. I just checked for stored codes and there was none.

I've had one go bad with no code.....

I have read that a bad VSS with no code is not unusual...
