Default Dakota digital fuel gauge setup

Hoping someone can help resolve my issues with fuel gauge calibration. I have a 2023 RKS and installed a MLX2011 gauge. Not sure if I’m misreading the instructions but I fill the fuel tank and then:
- place the gauge into setup mode
- go to fuel
- select range to empty
- select On
- select Learn reset
use bike until less than 20% full however the gauge doesn’t seem to recognise a refill etc.

Do I need to buy a fuel sensor? Or does it work with current fuel system (I do have a flush mounted gauge setup) or is there something else that I’m stupidly missing ?

any help appreciated

I'll take a stab at this. I had Dakota Digital gauges on my Street Glide a few years back, so here goes......as far as I know, the only extra sensor needed for some Dakota Digital gauges is for oil pressure, so.......

No, you do not need a fuel sensor. Like the HD gauge, or the flush mounted gauge, it takes time for the "BCM" to learn your fuel usage. Might take 2-3 tanks running to almost empty until you get an accurate reading.

In the mean time while this is going on, (as a technique), set your trip meter "A" to zero. When mileage gets to be around 210-220, it's about time to refill, on average.

You'll see that after awhile the gauge will be fairly accurate. But like most long time riders, you'll still depend on how many miles you've gone before refilling.

If you're concerned about running dry, keep a long siphon in your saddlebag.....just in case
