I had a wonky speedo on my 05 RK so replaced the VSS. Still doesnt work. Mine is a little different...... the auto turn signals work just fine, no other issues than the speedo. Has anyone experienced this? Ive disconnected and reconnected the battery too. I keep the battery on a tender all the time, so not sure of how good it is..... could that be the issue?
Any help would be great!
With any electrical issue, it's always wise to verify you have a solid, strong 12v power source (battery load test, cables, & connections), then recheck codes and conduct your diagnosis.
An erratic speedo AND turn signals not self-cancelling are the classic symptoms of a failing/failed VSS. Just one or the other, could be the VSS or the Speedo gauge itself...
Since you replaced the VSS, and still have an erratic speedo, I would now suspect the speedo gauge or its connections/wiring....
On 05s the speedo gets the speed from the vehicle data bus. The ECM gets the vehicle speed from the speed sensor and sends it out to the TSM/TSSM and Speedo. Sounds like the speedo lost communications with the ECM. It is either the speedo is dead or the data line going to the speedo is broken. Try holding the trip meter button in on the speed during power on and see it it can load codes from the TS(S)M or ECM.
Your turn signals auto cancel.
Do BOTH the needle and odometer NOT register miles?
Has anybody jump started the bike recently?
Has anybody checked voltage at battery at rest, while cranking and then at high idle?
Yes, turn signals auto cancel just fine.
The odometer is working correctly....... and i can go thru the code menu's - no codes come up.
No jump starting. I have a battery tender on the battery tho.
Havent check battery voltage...... thats what i was wondering, if a bad or weak battery would cause this.
The speedo needle does all kinds of weird things....... sits at 90mph while idle.... 0mph when going down the road...... at idle sits at 10mph then when revving bike jumps up to 20mph, 30 mph. etc
.
If the speedo is dead would it do any of these weird things? and would the odo work fine? Would odo work if the data line was broken? I can read codes and shows no codes for anything.
I will next take speedo cluster thing off and check the connections. Sure hope its not a speedo, those bad boys are expensive!
Make sure the battery cables are tight along with the motor to chassis. You need to check the voltage on the battery. If the regulator goes bad the speedo can do weird things. It should toss an error tho.. No errors kind of implies a wacky speedo..
everything looks tight.... battery tested 13 v , like i said it is on a batt tender.tests down to 9v when cranking.
The speedo is currently showing 120mph. I took the inst cluster off and checked all the cables...looks good..... i know there is a vid of metering out the speedo on youtube somewhere, maybe ill try that.
