Slow/Hard Start - other related issues - Solved!
On Sunday, I led a HOG ride, and the ride ended at the dealership (which was closed). After saying our farewells, I went to leave and the starter would spin, but it didn't engage with the engine. The dealership was closed until Tuesday, and I have a big ride coming up tomorrow. I know a guy who opened the building, and we rolled the bike in. I left an email with the appropriate people.
*Now* they can reproduce the problem. This whole time it's been a defective starter motor. I got the bike back yesterday and it cranks over faster than it ever has. It starts easy, and no more ugly noises from the primary. I'm happy.
Luckily, this was covered by ESP, so I only paid the deductible. More importantly, the bike is ready for the next three days of probably 700 miles total.
I had the same symptoms with a brand new aftermarket (All *****) starter on my old bike (2000 FLHTC).
It backfired and all sorts of unpleasantness after a fresh 103" high compression build with ported heads.
It had S$S 570 gear drive cams but they were the easy start cams so it shouldn't have been a problem.
Finally it backfired and broke the ring gear and destroyed the starter drive.
Replaced everything with another new starter and all the problems were gone, fired right up after that 'tll the day I sold it.
