Default primary noise

2013 ultra classic. While letting the clutch out and holdinig the front brake on i hear a rattling noise in the primary.Any one thing this could be or many differant things it could be.There is no noise on startup or while riding the bike.I am not a mechanic but would like some insight before taking it to a mechanic. Is it also unsafe to ride?If it's the compensater is Baker the one to go with? Thanks in advance.
Peace and Prayers.

That could be a sign that the compensator is failing. It certainly would be worth removing the outer primary cover and giving everything a close inspection.

If you need a comp, I would stick with the HD. The best version of the '07+ "improved" compensator was introduced with the Rushmore bikes in 2014. It proved to be much less problematic than the several versions offered between the "upgrade" in 2007 and the 2014 upgraded comp.

I had this comp in my 2016 Ultra Classic, and it was handling my 124" crate engine (135HP/151TQ) just fine. I only removed it because I went to a solid front engine sprocket, for a gear change

You have a 2013, so you won't need to upgrade the rotor to fit the newest comp version. You will need to attach the oil scoop to your outer primary cover (details in the install instructions), or I guess you could buy a 2014+ outer primary cover that has the oil scoop built-in.

The best HD comp version is available for your bike in this kit:

Good luck with your primary inspection..

If you opt for the primary cover, they are the narrower cover so it might be a good thing.

I think hattitude has it sorted out and you may need a new comp. If you do this on your own, you will need to get a 2 part epoxy that is (surprisingly) not included with the kit to glue the oil deflector in place. You can also get a new primary cover as RKZen has suggested and it will come with the oil deflector forged into the metal of the new cover.

Oops, I missed this, either way, it's a good choice and you get a nice and shiny new primary cover and don't need to glue a plastic part onto an oil soaked metal cover and hope it holds.

I replaced the compensator on my 2013 Ultra this March. I went with the Baker and have been very happy with it! Very quiet and no need to glue or epoxy any parts inside the primary cover. It’s not that difficult of a job if you take it on yourself. My 2 cents.

it does sound like a comp issue.

Curious, are you running Syn3 or Formula Plus in the Primary? I had a similar problem with a bike that year. It would sound like a bucket of loose bolts. Switched from Syn 3 to Formula Plus in the primary and it immediately went away. I'm not the only one that has done that with good results. worth a try

Thanks to all the great replys.Very helpful.I spoke with Baker about a new comp.I explained the best i could the noise i heard. She said it didn't sound like a comp issue but more like chain slap.I will know more once he gets the cover off.She also said to go ahead and ride it.There is no noise while riding the bike.Bike starts and runs perfect.I hear the noise when i apply the front brake and let the clutch out enough to make the bike feel like it wants to move. Then i hear the clatter in the primary. When i ride off there is no noise. Thanks again to all replys. You all have been a huge help.Once i found out whats making the noise,i will follow up.

No indication of the number of miles on the OP's bike. Several related items that might be a good idea to check and replace if necessary are the chain tensioner, inner primary bearing (it the inner case is removed) and the transmission shift shaft seal. Would be a shame to need to tear it all apart again in 5000 to 10,000 miles to replace something that is easily accessed during a comp change.
