Default Compensator frustrations

Hey folks,

I while on a trip recently I blew my motor on my 2013 ultra. After getting home I found a replacement 2012 motor to replace it. I hat to swap over my stator and rotor and bolted up my primary. Now my compensator is knocking like crazy at idle. It’s the updated SE compensator that I just replaced this winter

to fix it, I added an extra spring from the old one from the previous year and that didn’t fix it. So, I decided to put my older one in that was previous to the SE one and it too is knocking and it also has the added spring. I replaced that one out of precaution previously, not as a failure. Am I missing something here? The knocking is only at idle, not during riding.

to my understanding the 2012 motor is the same as a 2013 103 motor. I don’t want to replace this with another SE comp to have the same issue. The old comp was the updated style with the hex nut and the SE one I have is the T70 but. My case already had the channel so I didn’t need to glue in the piece. My alignment with the clutch sprocket is within spec too, and tension is ok.

Kind of new to HD sounds so I had to pull the stator out, installed a new one, put the compensator back on and for some reason I happened to move the clutch basket. There was so much swing back and forth I had to pull the comp and whatever reassembly sequence I went thru, now there was zero clutch big outer movement.

That said, the easiest test is to pull either cover off, move the chain back and forth if the adjust plate if taken off, or move the clutch basket if you take that cover off. No movement, then it's not what was my case at the time.

Does it make the noise when engine is cold? If only when hot, try pilling the clutch in for a few seconds and see if knock goes away. If it does, then it's in your transmission.

It may be in the maintenance section in here, on youtube or available through a google search, there is a tolerance for spring stack height and if yours have lost their spring, a replacement set may be the only fix. Adding a spring from the previous comp worked for me, I am surprised it didn't help you. Harley also sells shims to restore the spring tension.

Curious, did you hear the "new" motor run before you bought it? (assuming it was used)
