I’m Looking to put GPS tracking devices on an ultra Classic and another bike. Looking for real time tracking, easy installation, from riders that have actually installed and preferably no subscription. Thanks in advance.
Air tags work well since easy to hide somewhere on the bike, but if looking into other system that is going to draw battery power, pretty easy to locate since will be connected to battery in the first place if connected to battery/ will be pulling power down from battery as well.
So on that note, if going to be using a hard wire tracker, make sure to install it in an area deep inside the bike, make sure it have a back up battery in it, and do not directly wire it to the battery cable terminals that will be a dead give away is there when someone pulls the seat to look at the battery.
And just a FYI, but really need to start tracking the bike as soon as it stolen, since many pro thief's will get it into moving faraday cage ASAP, to block any trackers so they can be pulled and destroyed, so will only have last spot where it went into the cage, and not where it may be now. Hence most of the time if bike is still in the states, it stripped down so it parts can be sold with ease, or just stolen to be take and sold whole abroad isntead.
So yes, you can install a tracker, but your best bet for the bike to not be stolen, don't leave is some where that it can be stolen with ease isntead.
I think most of the GPS trackers have some sort of subscription, and depending on the "real time" interval, can be expensive and many have self contained batteries. Do some research as many have like a 5 minute notification interval like this one by Monimoto. Others, like this one by LandSeaAir have plans depending on how fast the "real time" you want as in here.
If you like the AirTag mentioned, by the time you find your bike, don't be surprised if it's all parted out.
depending on what your actual use plan is, would determine what would be the best product for you. i just use 'find my iphone' from apple. if i'm on a ride, my wife can track me if she needed to. best part? no extra fees or costs.
AirTags only work when in close proximity to an iPhone. So, not an option IMHO. GPS trackers need a cellular connection to provide data you can log into. As such, you need a subscription.
I recently bought a car from a dealer, that pre installed Apex protect. I had to prepay the subscription which was about $30 per month for 3 years. I’m actually quite impressed with it. It sends alerts when the car moves,p. You can set parameters for notification, like a geofence, and speed. I can log into it any time and find location & battery voltage. And it provides a track updated about every minute. It also creates an event map, that you can click onto each event and see location, time, and speed.
