What sort of gasoline have you been using? Top Tier gas has more detergents and scavenging agents than most "brand X gasoline. The web site: toptiergas.com explains it very well. If you are going to make a long ride at interstate speed, filling with top tier gas may help clean up the engine. The detergents work better at higher heat so the sustained high speed trip is more effective.A few hundred miles of sustained 75 to 80 mph (or more if you can do it where you are) should cook off some of that carbon. Gasoline is a hydroCARBON product so some carbon will be deposited in normal operation. Proper air/fuel ratio and a quality gasoline should minimize the build up.
It seemed I did not run my 2008 Road King hard enough to keep the spark plugs clean. Had to go to a non Harley plug that was one step hotter than the stock plug and could run those for the full recommended mileage before they needed to be changed. Years ago I bought a fair amount of Murphy/Walmart gas. They came up with the "Add A Tech" (spelling might not be correct) program and the pump would ask an annoying number of questions before you could pump any fuel. The goal was to tell the pump how much additive to mix with the gas. I Emailed Murphy Fuel company and asked if that irritating program was an admission that they didn't mix enough additive into the fuel at the terminal. Not surprisingly, I never got an answer and they never got any more of my money.
