Craigslist
I won't let them test without a shot of their driver's license.
Got called into the middle of a sell by my son since he was at work.
Granddaughter was selling a old car he had given her since I had given her the wife's late model low milage CRV.
Craigslist add. A professional crook was coming at 4. He showed up at 7 when it had gotten dark.
They drove slowly past stopping 5 houses down. One walked back.
Big guy, huge gold cross around his neck. Gold brackets on his teeth.
He test drove car with me. Said he would take it. By then, Granddaughter had title out, was counting money.
Whole time he was running his mouth with distractions.
By then all I wanted was he to go away and my Granddaughter to go in.
All the money was counterfeit.
I covered it and considered it a learning experience.

I've sold small items on CL and bought some on FB Marketplace. Always at the local PD - most PDs have "exchange areas" (or something) - a parking lot with a camera. If large cash transaction like buy/sell a motorcycle, take the title with the other party to your local bank and deposit the money in front of them and exchange the signed title. Not a rocket science. As long as you have a bill of sale, you can explain if needed where the money came from or why you withdrew a large amount.

Granddaughter called me and after explaining to her she had our car.
She lived in another city. I called the police officer while the young lady was there. He told me to call that city's police department.
After getting off phone, I told her we would come get the car with the police. Never called them. Granddaughter and I drove to her house and I unlocked the car with an extra key and drove away.
We got a new released title, sold the car and I got my money back.
Police don't have the time or resources for this crap. What insurance is for. But other then liability on old cars, you win some and lose some.
Sold a Civic not long ago that I had replaced with a new FIT for a graduation present. Lady at the bank used three pins on money. And I could sense a displeasure of being caught up in it.
