Ran it hard
Also, if you bought the bike used, not a bad idea to pull primary cover and even pull clutch, to give all that a once over check as well.
Hence friction pads may be fine with life left, but bike was used in a lot of stop and go, or parade type use, were the its not the friction plate that become worn, but steel plate are over heated to cause them to be case hardened, and the harder they get, the less grab they have to the friction discs.
So easy to just mic the friction discs to get an idea of what they have left on them, and as for steel plates, light hint of heat is not bad and media blasting may be able to make them right as rain again,
but if clutch steel discs are dark blue to really case harden them like this,
then they need to be replaced. Hence the harder the plates are hardened, the more is like the friction plates are trying to get friction against ice instead.
As for bike level, primary fluid should only be to here,
Not enough fluid, and the fluid is not slung enough to wash the clutch back down to cause the over heat problems, while fluid too high, cause fluid friction problems between plates with clean release/hard to find neutral instead.
