I think you knew the answer before starting this thread and just wanted to whine about Harley.

Rode with out for 30 years. I kinda if think this newbie problem where you get some more experience. Maybe you are experienced and rely on technology.

Clutch has to be out. So I don't find it all that useful. More of niceity
Well I am new to Harley-Davidson. But I've been riding motorcycles for 50 years mostly Honda. Although my first motorcycle was a Benelli in 1976.
My current Honda is a 1983 Magna V65 and it has a nice LCD gear indicator clutch or no clutch.
So yes I have been relying on 1983 technology.
Oh I knew when I asked this question it wouldn't be why do you need that?
I just really like it.
But I'm getting used to this just like the right turn signal.

I have rode 70s, 80s , 98 magna and 2001 Kawasaki and none of them had indicator. It is my no means standard on old jap bikes.

Get some practice is my opinion . I am not saying it would not be nice. But live without it or buy another jap bike that has it

Those aren't my only two choices.
I was just asking about the 6th gear indicator.
If I came off his whining, I apologize.
I am not a Honda lover nor do I have a Harley Davidson preference
I just have 2 motorcycles
I think you can have a Harley without being all in.

Green light comes on, you know that. If not read the manual. Not rocket surgery. When you are in 6th green light comes on. At least it does on my 2007.

2007 6 speeds might be first year for this feature on touring bikes

I love it.
There are several striking differences I am now comfortable with - the forward (as I see it) shifter and brake, the right turn signal on the right handlebar and the jiffy stand (which I first thought was loose and broken).
Even after realizing that's the way it's suppose to be to lock into place with a notch I still don't trust it.
But I really miss a gear position indicator.
I just noticed a very tiny green 6 when in 6th gear - but none of the other gears? Other than the even smaller little green light for neutral is this all there is?
It doesn't make sense to me, if you're on the freeway and you're not sure you're in 6th, just try to shift it up again. No harm.
What I want to know is when I'm in second going around a corners after downshifting from a higher gear.
I've ended up in first gear a few times and lurched forward - or in 3rd and bogged down.
Please excuse this newbie question and the fact that I may be a sissy for even wanting a gear indicator.
Do I have to remember and do math every time?
Or are my 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 lights burned out?
Welcome to the show!
My previous bikes were Honda and Kawasaki.
Yup the Jiffy Stand is unique to HD. It took me a while to get used to it. I was always thinking the bike was going to tip over. LOL
As far as the gear indicator goes, 6th gear is the only one that has a display. It will become second nature to you over a short amount of time.
Enjoy your new ride.

Thank you!
I am getting used to it. I love it already.
But still each time I put it on the kickstand I think oh damn it's really broken now, it's going down. Heart goes into my throat and then relief when it stops. Kind of exciting really.

I don't get how you don't get over that in 5 minutes.

My 2007 has a lower lean than my other ones. At times I thought about longer kickstand

But never was I worried when coming from jap bike that it wouldn't work

IMO Harley has a lot better stand. I rarely worry about sink. Rarely put anything under stand

Rounders, Oh, I don't think it's true that Harley may not be for me because I was lamenting the fact that there is no gear shift indicator.
In fact it almost got me hooked up with a workaround Harley gear indicator add on - but just not available for my bike.
And getting over the new to me kickstand is going to take some time after 50 years with the other kind.
I hadn't hit the stringent Harley or the highway (no pun intended) in these forums as yet - NOT that I'm accusing you of that.
Everyone's been pretty nice about my stupid questions and adjusting from Hondas to my first Harley.
Like my V4musclebike forums people here seem pretty cordial.
But I probably did come off as whining and a Honda lover criticizing Harley.
I stand corrected and myself reprove.
