I have a stage 1 kit on my 11 street glide (96) and am wanting to install lowers. The filter element is too long and won't allow the lower on that side to be installed. Looking for options for a shorter filter element. Doesn't appear there are any shorter filter options through HD.
Curious what you are installing and how it is hitting. Air cleaner was first thing that came to mind from title. But the SE's I have just fit under stock cover.
Yeah, that checks out. That cleaner won't fit with lowers. I think they offer a similar design that does, but I'm not sure if it's a filter element swap or if you need the whole thing. You'll have to look it up I guess.
Look for intakes that fit an Ultra Classic or Limited etc that come with lowers.
The lowers are the Mt Rushmore style from Hogworkz.
Harley used to sell a short filter for that Heavy Breather. It was part #288714-10.
Here is an ad for it on the internet. However, when I checked for a current price, it showed it is no longer available from HD. Bottom line, it was made by K&N, so you could call a K&N distributor and see if they still make/sell it..
The one caveat, I seem to remember they advertised it as working on a bike with lowers that had the glove compartments, but it wouldn't work on lowers with speakers. The speaker grills apparently would hit the air filter. But that info is all from memory.
Good luck and report back what you end up doing for your solution...
PS- FYI, "Rushmore" was the nickname for the new touring models introduced in 2014. The lowers you are looking at are probably "Rushmore" models referring to the newer baggers. I don't think they are "Mount Rushmore" models... In any case, just confirm they will fit on your 2011 (pre-Rushmore) bagger.
Thank you! I called HD today and they told me they do not offer a short filter anymore. His solution was to buy this (https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...kit/p/29400217). Amazingly this was cheaper than buying just the backing plate, filter and breather (over$400).
You need a $70 filter, that they used to sell for $120. But since they don't sell it anymore, their solution is for you to buy an entirely new air cleaner system at $350.00
You could also measure the diameter of the filter opening/mounting area, then figure out how short it needs to be, then call K&N with those dimensions ans see if they have one to fit.. Probaly be around $60.
Good luck and let us know how the K&N filter works out....
I think that will be the route I take. On K&N's site they have a stage 1 kit available so my plan is to buy the filter element that comes with that kit.....hopefully anyway.
