Well....back to square 1...... got in touch with K&N (tech guy was just super!), gave him the part number of their stage 1 kit with the compact filter. Nope.... OD is different than the screamin eagle so next step was to ask about and compact filter I found on the website, the OD on the flange will work but the overall diameter is 6" and there is not enough clearance for the backing plate. I should've did a better job homework wise on the lowers.

Did you give him the old, obsolete Harley part number that K&N used to make for Harley, #288714-10 ?
He may be able to cross reference that number to a filter they currently sell of the same size... Worth a try...
