Update - pulled the entire primary and found that the locking plate for the front pulley nut had backed out and destroyed the inner primary case. At lease it's not a trans issue. Sourcing a replacement inner primary case as well as pulley gaskets etc. eBay is a great source for used cases.
Glad to hear you found the problem and its not as bad as you thought. Best of luck with your project!
Like they say: "prepare for the worst, pray for the best".
I had a 97 Electra Glide that had 160,000 miles on it.
One day while trying to casually leave a stop.....nothing/no go.
I figured the transmission had broke a shaft.
But when I pulled the primary I found the rivets that held the primary sprocket to the clutch basket we're all broken.
I put an eBay clutch in it on the cheap. 👍

Was the pulley nut still tight? If loose, you might need a new pulley. If pulley bad, main drive gear might be an issue.
One thing I'd be concerned about is the main drive gear bearing. They don't like side loads.. If parts got jamed between the pulley and inner primary there might be an issue.. If the parts simply dragged along the side and gouged the case, good chance things are OK.
The good thing is that many guys pulled the 5 speed in favor of a six and they are available.
