Earlier this week the bike ran fine, started up after I washed it to put it in the garage. The next morning all I got from the starter was a soft click. Everything else (lights, horn, radio) worked fine. I checked cables and such, verified battery voltage and everything seemed OK. Gave up and drove the cage so as to not be late. That afternoon came home and tried everything again with no success. Since my drive is 500 feet long and down hill I decided to try a bump start.Made sure the battery cables were snugged up on the terminals for the umpteenth time, put the seat back on and closed up the house. I decided to push the button more time before I did the gravity assitsed bump start and it cranked right up. I shut it off and it cranked right up again.
I decided to go to the dealer since its still under warranty and ask them to check it out. As soon as I told them what I experienced the asked, "07 Ultra?" They have 5 or 6 in the last couple months with the same issue. It seems that on a few bikes the battery ground connection at the frame or the hot cable to the starter may not be fully tightened during assembly. They took my ride right then and checked both cables and said that the ground connection was just slightlymore than finger tight and there was some oxidation between the cable and the frame. I probably moved it just enough to re-establish a ground as I was putting things back together.
The moral of this tale is check both ends of both battery cables and make sure they are clean and tight. The guys at Thunderbird HD (Albuquerque, NM) said they were only seeing it on Ultras.
