I have read a ton about these brackets in old threads on here, but didnt find what I was looking for..
Pretty sure I broke one..or more...today as I got the famous rattle in the fairing of the 06 Streetglide.
Now, my question is this. How much are these brackets at the dealer? Anyone know? If they are cheap enough, thinking of picking them up, taking them in to work (I work in a machine shop), and having the stress points welded and strengthened and then replacing them myself rather than schedule, wait, and screw with the dealer. Good idea? Or should I just repair my broken one(s)?
Anyone with pics of their repairs? As usual...thanks guys!
Was qouted 66.00 aside for the lrg ones that run virtically on my 02Ultra, tried to fix the right side one and then noticed the left side was busted as well.
They didnt line up perfectly when I put a piece along side and pop riveted together and now there is a rubbing noise comming from the front end fairing, will be off to the stealer next week to purchase new ones and spend about 6 hours it looks like stripping down and replacing !!!
Have some photos to add , but have to resize and there is a steak calling my name right now on the BBQ.
Laters Guys and Gals !!!
Definately get to that BBQ!!!!!!! lol Thanks for the reply man. 66.00 a side, wow. Well, seeing how the dealer will only want to fix it (for free under warranty) with only stock replacements that will probably break again, guess I will tear it down tomorrow and beef up and fix what i got then. 6 hours huh? A real pain is it? Luckily I got a shop manual and a torque wrench......
You would think with all the warrinty repairs made to these brackets, the MOCO would wake up and make a better bracket. And save themselves some money and us fairing ownwers some grief. Doc
Called a buddy of mine who is a tech at a Harley dealer. He said it is very common for those to break..obviously. He said it is more common for the vertical black braces to break and thats probably what it is. Kinda told me what toexpect as far as you have to remove the radio to take off the vertical brackets. Said to only do one side at a time so the inner fairing doesnt drop.. He agreed that if taken in, it would be fixed with stock brackets and if it was him, he would definately take them off, repair them, and beef them up. As many as he has seen, he said you would be time ahead to do it that way and screw the MoCo warranty way. So thats my plan of attack. May tackle into it later today. With all the pics on here and my shop manual , cant be that bad. Will post pics as to what I find and the repair. Thanks.
I personally can't see going through all the hassle of replaceing them with something that most likely will break again. I believe the fix I did is going to hold up a lot better than the stock brackets and was a whole lot easier to fix as I didn't have to tear the whole thing apart. Price? about $4 to fix all 4 brackets.
