Well finally after a whole summer working and getting used to the RK a friend and I took off for our annual fall tour. 1800 miles in five days. We went through New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and a bit of Maryland.
The bike ran fantastic but as we stick to 2 lane asphalt (less than 30 miles on interstates) I never really used 6th gear but once speed was at 70 or so on the interstate6th was great. I went on this trip with the stock seat and trust me that is never going to happen again. My main comments about that torture device cannot be printed in a family friendly environment. Everything else about the bike was great but I don't really like the Dunlops and will probably switch to Metzelers when replacement time comes.
get the road zepplin air seat. Metzlers are good tires but i stick with dunlops because a dealer will always have a replacement whereas metzlers may have you held up as many dealers do not stock them. besides, i go as much out of my way to get to the interstate as you do tofind backroads and the dealers are always near the interstate. hope you got the tire and wheel package or signed up for the deluxe package with road america. you re gonna need it.
It is good to hear you enjoyed your road trip. We can't ever get enough miles covered in a season.
I also switched to Metzeler's at my first tire change. You couldn't give me a set of Dunlops to run on my bike. Wear is horrible, handling is horrible, rain capabilities are atrocious, although they are cheap to buy in comparison.
I assume the tire and wheel package is some sort of road insurance. I have been riding for 34 plus years and 10s of thousands of miles and have never had a tire problem. I always carry a repair kit for emergencies until I can get to a dealer.
I could never give up backroads and therfore will live with the risk. For me whenever a 2 lane highway changed over to a new section of Interstate the ride immediately got boring as thes roads while great for covering distance do not go over and around as I like, they go through and render the geography of the land flat. I do fully appreciate that for others interstates are the way to go and this is not meant to ridicule that option. Just not my cup of tea. Besides I kinda grew fond of the sound of grinding floor boards.

The cost doesn't botther me too much. I am used to the cost of tires like the Continental Road Attacks for the Ducati and I am lucky to get 6-7000 miles out of a set of those.
