So I'm gathering that its the crossover pipe that's causing the complaints. So about how much more would I be looking at for the PCIII, etc. less pipes to right a bike that is good for a ride and pig roast out of the box?I'm disappointed that HD didn't step up to correct the problem for the '07 guys and didn't change much for the '08's. I guess it will never make it to a recall due to the fact that it hasn't been a safety
issue --yet.
No its like what NCCOP said, EPA constraints. I'll tell you this though. I did all these same mods to my 04 RKC. As with about a dozen sportbikes I've had. The reason being that about 20% of the potential of a bike has been capped from the factory for years. Harley just happens to be one of the few doing itwith an air cooled motor, hence all the speculation about seeing Harley's water cooled any year now.
Well, at least it sounds like the high-heat issue can be resolved -- at your own expense and I haven't heard anything else negative about the 96. What else does the EPA want? The bikes already get about 50 mpg. on the highway. 'Guess they couldadd pedals to the '09

I'm not sure but I think everyone has been saying the IDS is a fix for the 5th gear problem. Like I said no problem with mine. But I could not live with the noise my friends bike makes.

I've read that the IDS stock on 08s resolves the clatter but not the 5th gear whine.
My 07 still has a loud 5th gear whine, so much so that I sometimes find myself riding at non-ideal RPMs in 4th and 6th just to avoid 5th.
If you want strong power at interstate speeds for navigating through traffic, you'll end up wanting to be in 5th a lot, at least to get the most out of your bike.
I don't care what their excuse is about the straight cut 5th gear being more durable. A well built bike should not make this noise. A well built tractor, for that matter, shouldn't make this noise. I've turned a number of folks away from HD on account of this BS too.
I'm overall happy with the bike but I'm still bitter about this.
What started out as a high-heat issue with the touring bikes has also uncovered the 1st & 5th gear troubles as well. Like I said before, I am (was) ready to make the trade from the 1200 C but I'm not so sure about it anymore. 'Ridiculous that Harley would expect customers to pay for the IDS or ANYTHING that was not right riding out of the dealership. I think I'll pay my local dealership a visit this weekendand play dumb now that I've spent some time gathering info. here and see what they tell me. 'Wonder if the problems were fixed on the 08's. Detro996 had it right -- ride the bike you are going to buy but that's easier said than done sometimes.
what you are referring to as 'troubles' is a characteristic of the new cut on the gears. most people are not having problems with it. yes, there are a few, and a few of those are the 'latte on my dash' types as well. i have been nothing but happy with my 07. got it in jul of 06. went with a pciii in september 06 to richen up the fuel mixture. didn't do the rest of the stage I until december/january maybe? maybe even later than that. could have continued to ride it with stock pipes and aircleaner and been happy with the performance. but, i hated the look of the crossover, true duals just cleans up that area behind the rear jug so much. not to mention, the stock mufflers are just too damn polite! my bike was never extremely noisy, so i was happy with that. read so many positives on the ids, i went ahead and spent the extra 200 bucks from discountbiker.com for that and had it installed with a new rear tire.
i wouldn't let all the naysayers scare you away from getting a new bike. negotiate the ids install before purchase, do a stage I, ride the hell out of it and enjoy it. oh bring a toothbrush to brush your teeth clean from the love bugs. you will have a boseg (big ol' sh*t eating grin)
Just to chime in here a bit. If you are considering a '07 or a '08, unless you get a heck of a deal on the '07, I would buy a newer '08. There were quite a few things added to the '08 over the '07. Choice is yours, but, for me to get a '07 now that I have seen what the '08 has, the '07 would have to be a smoking deal. I mean like, "An offer I couldn't refuse." But, buy what makes you happy. I doubt that you will regret either one of them. Good luck with the search, and I hope you don't get raked over the coals trading in your sporty.
Let's keep this in perspective. The STOCK bike is fine and will run tireless in even the hottest weather. Some people like to hop up thier bikes and do so - that is thier right. Others just ride them. You do not have to alter anything on the vehicle to make it a reliable fun bike in any weather that is seen in the lower 48. "It feels hot" is a pretty vague guide.
Buy the bike, ride it, then decide for yourself what the bike needs. IF heat is an issue, $150 for a Fullsac True Duals Kit, $50 for Mid Frame Heat Deflectors, $100 for a K & N 3909 air filter and enjoy.
Ditto...I could have ridden mine stock forever. I have enough "real-life" stuff to worry about to let a few noises (on an inherently noisy machine) bother me to the level that I feel dissatisfied with the bike. Others have different views on it, and that's cool with me...to each his own.I added the Stage 1 stuff for performance gains, and due to the fact that I'm just an incurable gear-head and tinkerer. I've ridden my Father-In-Law's '08 Wing and it's super quiet, runs like a scalded dog, and is cool as a cucumber....and I hated it. I'll take hot, loud, and noisy and have a great time with it.
