I will pass on the advice I got when I asked some of the same questions after I purchased my RK. It goes like this, " Don't worry about all that S**T!! just get on, shut up and ride, it will all work out!!!" Seriously, you will have to get used to the feel and that won't happen in 10 miles, you will be gone for a while. Break the beast in like the book says. Always stop behind the car in front of you. Traffic is a problem wherever you are so get in it and get used to it. No Fear, it's worth it.

They've said it all, enjoy the ride.

Lakesrider, I went through this a couple of weeks ago. When I picked up my bagger. It has been many years since I rode. First thing I noticed was the weight. These babies are heavy. Make sure you have sure footing. If there are any slick spots. I stayed in the right lane take your time. If they dont like it they will go around you. Watch for traffic. Oh that smile that you will have on your face. Not much you can do about that. LOL. You probably wont sleep much tonight. Enjoy your day tomorrow. Bob.

Vary your RPMs for the first hundred miles. Dont hop on the highway and keep it at a steady 55mph or any thing. Drive through the neiborhood, doing a lot of shifting..... Pay no attention to that smell the first couple hundred miles. And like the other guys said, remember the weight....

ORIGINAL: Lakesrider

Picking up my first Harley ('06 Road King) on Saturday morning. What should I look out for on the first ride?
Besides frostbite! I'm only going about 10 miles or so seeing as we are expecting snow this weekend.
Just wondered if anything radical might normally appear during a maiden voyage that I should watch for on a Harley.
Does it take time to bed in the brakes, or are are they pretty good right out of the hole.
Just psyching myself up.....
Thanks!
Picked up my 06 RK thursday night. Like was said about varing the mph for the first 100 miles or so.......
Hope you have better luck with yours than Iam having with mine right now.
But Iam sure mine will be running sweet when the snow starts........LOL

Oh yeah, watch out for the idiots

I picked up my new 05 FLHRI Road King last year new and the first thing I noticed was the weight. I had a smaller bike before. Now that i am used to it i would never go back to a smaller bike. I love my Road King. My mechanic told me to ride it like you stole it. I have 8,000 miles on it now and it does not use any oil and runs good. You will spend a lot of time keeping it clean and polishing the chrome. You need to go to Bike week in daytona or Sturgis. They are both a lot of fun.

You were right it is heavier than I'm used to and I will admit to putting my foot out going around a tight corner. I guess I'll have to do more neighborhood riding to get used to slow turning. But after I got going I was fine. Felt like a kid riding his bike without training wheels for the first time. First time using floorboards too. Insert big grin here. The smell was awsome! One thing though it does not like to run cold. Only thing that got cold on me was my hands. Well it was 24 degrees this morning when I picked it up. But, 2 pair of long johns, jeans, a teeshirt, new HD sweatshirt and my leathers took care of the core. Well I was only supposed to go 10 miles but I put on a hundred and two today. Just couldn't park it. Lots of looks like I was an idiot driving a bike out there today, but had fun. Got it home just as the sun was going down and took these pics. Thanks for the advise. Now that I actually have the bike I feel like I can post some stuff on the forum...So watch out!

OK I just figured out that you can link to the gallery by clicking on the camera under your Avitar/User name...
I'll get this picture posting thing yet....
