Find myself looking more and more often at the touring bikes and have a question, what is the difference between the street glide and a electra glide standard? I get that there are a few minor things, fairing, suspension height, exhaust tips, but why is there a 2K price difference?
First, try a search. A lot of info to read about. The fairing is not different between the two, you mat have it confused with a road glide? Anyways, you are right about the suspension being lower on the sg. There are a few cosmetic differences, as well. The eg standard has the silver motor, and the sg is black and chrome. The sg has a radio, and has to be added on the standard. Seats, obviously are different. The eg standard is just that, standard. A great place to start a build from. You can make a egs look almost identical to the sg, minus the motor. That is the one main thing that the egs lacks, IMO. I just can't get use to it. Also, with the egs, you are very limited with factory paint.
Both are great bikes, but if you are looking for the best "deal" for a touring bike with a fairing, look at the eg classic. It has a tourpak, and a couple other features that you might want to add or subtract from the sg. Like I said, do a search for more in depth answers. Either way, a touring bike is a great ride. I don't know if you currently own a bike or not, but take one out for a test ride, and you will be convinced.
Seriously, I think the fairing is the big ticket item. You also don't get a radio or a couple of the small guages. Also don't get your choice of some of the nice paint schemes. The new RGs come with the black engine too. I don't know about a different height suspension, could be.
The RG is a fine bike, but also think about the EGC, espcially if you see yourself doing a lot of riding two up and/or overnights where the tour-pack comes in handy. I was on the fence about the RG vs the EGC and finally went with the EGC mainly for the tour-pack and also the chrome around the hard-bags, as I've had damage done to unprotected hardbags in the past. Those chrome rails do help protect the paint.
I just went back and forth with this. Like many said the EGC is the best bang for the buck. My wife did not like climbing on the EGC with the tour pack so we went with a standard which is fine with me b/c I like add ons. I was a little hesitant about the silver motor as well but I ended up with the blue which IMO looks really good with the silver. I really liked the SG but the 3g's extra (I was trading in) and the seat kept us with the standard.I am really happy with our decision, but that's why they make so many so each can choose what they like.
My wife dosen't like climbing on with the tour pack but sure loves kicking back on it. I just lean forward and she makes it on.
Another vote for the EG Classic.
Depends what you want... I have the SG and love the clean mean look to it. I have a sundowner seat, passenger backrest along with a detachable luggage rack, and a large windshieldthat I put on the bike when I go touring which gives me the EGC (minus the tourpak- but I have luggage that holds more than the tourpak anyway) functionability with the around town "cool" clean look.
I personally would not choose the EGS because I think you will wish you got the chrome engine and radio within a month of driving it off the lot.
I prefer the Electra Glide, I ride the Ultra version as I like all of the features that I do not need to add..... I think it rides better than the Street Glide too, that might just be me though....the luggage is a plus if you are married or have a girl friend who may go on an overnighter with you.... overall a better value if you ride any distance, for just going to work or to the local bar, it doesn't matter what you ride.
I've got an Ultra- my 2nd one. Comfortable down the highway, or just cruizin' around town. The one I have now is an 07SE with the chopped leather tour pak- it's pretty well just too small for holding 2 helmets, but I can pack enough in it for an easy weekend- leaving the saddlebags empty for adult beverages-WITH ice.
I've heard the UC is too big and heavy around town, but I've not noticed that, even with my honey onthe back seat.
Don't count the Road Glide out either. I haven't ridden any of the other touring HDs, so I have no comparison on how they ride, but I can tell you that my RG rides better than any metric I've ever owned, and I've owned plenty. This thing handles like a dream. My suggestion is to try to test ride all 3 before you buy.
