Start switch problem
Don't know if this is a switch problem or a wiring problem. I have a '06 FLHPI Police RK and just switched out controls to chrome. I eliminated the "pursuit" switch and wires from the connector. My bike doesn't start now. The "run" switch works, meaning it gets power and you can hear the bike power up but no reaction from the start button. Any suggestions? Anyone have similar issues? I checked fuses.
Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the FLHP.
Your bikewon't start until you connect the two black with red stripe wires in slots 7 and 8 of the connector into which you plugged the left handlebar wiring harness.
The OEM left handlebar switch housing/clutch lever have a clutch interlock switch that requires the clutch to be squeezed (closing the starter circuit) to allow the bike to start. When you switched the handlebar controls, you probably didn't consider the clutch interlock switch. The interlock switch is the primary reason that the HD handlebar levers for many years contained a statement in the fitment for each that they don't work on police models. '07 and newer touring bikes, civilian and police, include the interlock switch.
So, to close the circuit now, you need to splice the two black with red stripe wires together. The OEM interlock switch used to do this when the clutch lever was squeezed. The best way to do this is to remove the wires from the connector and splice them; if you have trouble removing the wires from the connector, you can cut them and splice the ends.
If your problem is something other than addressed above, let us know.
If you plan to do any more work on your bike, pick up the HD Service Manual for touring bikes and the police model supplement to avoid similar problems.
