ok here it is...i was on the bike today about 60 miles from home,,,speedo started bouncing & then went totally to zeroo,,,,miles were not changing either on digital part of the speedo....the the bike started to die when ever i let of the throttle totally... restarted it ..black smoke from tail pipe...made it home down shiffting at lights to restart bike ...but have to figure out what is going on,,,any help would be great...thanks..

Ah have a feelin' yer havin' a battery/stator issue - sounds like low voltage ta me.

If he wasn't havin' the other issues w/the bike runnin' properly, ah'd agree on the speedo sensor - or are they interfaced somehow?

Same thought here. Although it could be a charging, low voltage issue as well. Check the charging output.

The speed sensor sends info to the ignition, EFI and speedometer. They get dirty and can sometimes be taken out and cleaned. If not, they have to be replaced. Easy thing to check, easy fix. Common problem.
