Diff model and year, but i had the exact same problem you described on my 2000 1200 Custom. The bike would run then the speedo would drop to zero then the motor would buck and kick (and sometimes die altogether)but then it would go back to normal. When tracking the problem, i pulled on the battery cable and where it mounts to the motor/ignition it snapped. What happened was it corroded in the "protective" boot and was down to the last 1 or 2 strands of wire keeping the connection going, but were breaking, which resulted in the problems above. Try tracing your pos and neg from the battery to the frame and motor/ignition.
Hi:
Had the same exact thing happen to me with my 07' Ultra, (it had 300 miles on it then). I went to the dealer and they replaced the speed sensor, I presume when the speedo drops to zero the puter reads over reving and shuts engine down! I Have had 3600 trouble free miles since then. Hope this helps you.
Same problem with my 05 Eglide since new. The dealer has installed a new sensor and a new speedo and I've also tried a new sensor on the outside chance the one the dealer installed was defective. I still have the problem intermittently. I've also checked all the connections from the speedo back and found nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if it's the ECM. I should know in the spring when I install the Thundermax ECM.
Well I will jump in as well. I hooked up my Digital Dakota gauges the other day and when I did I had the VSS (white) wire on the speed sensor crossed up and this was the same result. My guess would be same as above. Try pulling the speed sensor and cleaning it quick and easy.
