I have a 03 roadking 25,000 miles. New Harley battery installed this summer. This past weekend I had some starting issues. Left sunday on a ride went to a gas station and filled up. Went to start bike, hit the starter button and I got a click and everything went dead. Pushed button and turned ignition **** to accessory a couple times but no juice. Took seat off, moved wires around checked fuses.Tried starting bike again and it worked. Did about 80 miles hit a gas station filled up went to start bike hit the starter button and it went click and then all dash board lights went off. Turned the ignition **** to accessory then to ignition a couple times. Lights came on while in accessory. Turned back to ignition and bike started. Stopped for lunch bike started up no problem. Stopped at store bike started up no problem when I left. Got home started bike a couple of times with no problem. This morning leaving for work hit starter button and got a click and lightsshut off, then lights came right back on. Hit starter again and I got a click and lights shut off. Turned **** from ignition to accessory and lights come on. Turn it back to ignition the lights blink then shut off. Back to accessory lights turn on, back to ignition they blink and shut off.
Battery cables are tight. Wires look OK. I did install an adapter to make my signal lights also work as running lights but I've ridden almost a 1000 miles since then. Wires looked OK. I'm thinking it is a loose wire or something in the ignition switch. Any ideas?
This link is for 03 Electraglides not Road King, but they use the same basic wiring harness to a point.
I would go to HD website and in the maintenance section enter your vin and mileage and see if any old recalls come up.
Sounds like you may have a bad ignition switch.
Early years had a recall for a load eliminator for the ignition switch.
I would also check all main connections first.
Battery cable clean and tight at BOTH ends and the connectors for the ignition switch;clean tight and no bare spots.
Starter brushes could be starting to fail thus drawing too much current, or possibly a bad armature in the starter.
But do the easy and simple things first, normally that's where it's at.
