Hi, that someone was me. Yes thats correct just under 2 quarts to reach the bottom of the clutch basket and no I wasn't changing it out in my yard. On the lift on a concrete garage floor. Hey I been wrenching since my old Bennelli in the late 60's and I have a lot of respect for any engineer & what the manual says but I only tell you what I experienced. 32 oz bottle (1 quart) could not even see the level. Just under 2 quarts came up to the clutch basket on my 06 Elect. So far the clutch works fine.
I cant speak for the 08's (what does your owners manual say) but I will impart this on ya,if you dont overfill it or underfill it a bit it won't leak. That oil is being literally flung all around keeping the chain and the basket in a oil bath. so an oz here or there shouldnt matter really. Now alotta ozs and your gonna have some issues...
With the bike upright and level, the fluid is to be at the BOTTOM of the Clutch Diaphram spring....
Touring bikes take 38-46 oz.... Larger and Different Primary housing...
Softails and Dynas are just about 32....
Don't let anyone with a late model touring bike tell you that you can use 32 and be done with it....
Use the Search Function.... You will see much discussion about this very subject....
Bob, Ive heard you say this before can I ask if this is right then why does the owners manual and the harley shop manual for touring models 02-06 both state 32 ounces, and then do not overfill? I know the 07 up takes more but every 02-06 it says the same thing 32ounces.
And there is a picture with a diagram that shows WHERE the correct level is to be, accompanying the procedures for Primary Fluid Replacement....
I know that the manual refers to 32 oz.... BUT, it also states WHERE the oil level is to be...

I guess it's just what ever you want to do, but every time the dealer has serviced any of my bikes (02-06 touring) they have only charged me for 1 qt. of formula +. I garantee you if they had added 4 or more extra ounces I would have been charged for 2 full quarts. And I know Bob knows his stuff, but I can't help to believe if more than 32 ounces was needed to funtion as it is built and functin flawlessly it would not be listed in every shop manual and owners manual for the past many years. I dont think a few extra ounces will hurt it, but show me some proof it helps anything. I will counter what ever is said with the fact that hundreds of thousands of harleys are serviced every year by dealers and Indy's all over the USA and elsewhere with 32 ounces and nothing but good results come from it.
