Havent received the bike yet. But the rack is on order with other things from Zanotti. Thats what I was thinking using the blue masking tape, didnt even know that there was a template with the rack. Thats why I love this board, everybody sharing so we can save a little $$ and get it done right. Nothing like doing it yourself instead of the stealership.
Agree, throw away the template. I took a little different approach putting mine on. I used just a dab of silicone on the grommets and put double stick tape on the bottom of the grommet. Position buy eye gave a little push downward. Pull off the rack and the grommets stay in place. Use a 1/8 inch bit to drill pilot holes, pop off the grommets remove the double stick tape and drill holes to proper size. I did put silicone on the bolts as per instructions but I know a lot of people don't and have no problems.
Burn the template, tear into little bits, eat it, feed it to the dog, just don't use it. I used the blue painter's tape and put it in the general area of the rack legs. Use a jack or something to level the bike. Eyeball where you want the rack and mark the holes with a felt tip. I drilled pilot holes before the full size ones. It was really hard to drill into my brand new bike but I sweated and did it. BTW, I used the silicone, but I'm a belt AND suspenders kinda guy anyway.
Finished my luggage rack install today. Took you alls advice and did the tape method no template it was so easy. The only thing I can add to it is after you trace it add a crosshair in each circle and measure, measure and you got it measure again. take a break for a few minutes come back and measure hahahaha
Great advice guys you have not lead me wrong yet. love this site
Let me guess.....I'm thinking there has to be at least ONE person who used the template and discovered it was wrong afterwards, and ended up going after the MOCO for a new Tour Pack. That speakspretty badly for them to continue putting this template in with the rack. All togethernow, repeat after me, 'Small claims court.'
Tossed the template as soon as I looked at it. Sweated bullets all the way, just thinking about having to order a new lid for that thing should I screw up. All in all, a nice little afternoon project after a decent autumn ride.
HAHA I thought I was the only one who felt like that!
