Primary Temps
I had to have the primary replaced on my 07 Road King after only 100 miles due to it being sent from the factory without any fluid in it. The dealer made it good and the bike has been running great for close to 3,000 miles now, however, the primary does get very hot and stays that way for a long time after the ride. Just wondering if you guys with similar bikes have experienced the same. Guess I'm just a little paranoid after the problem I had in the beginning.

Mine got hot enough to burn my ankle ... After installing the TFI its not bad. One of my friends with a '07 softail got the download, his primary runs cooler than mine. I do have lowers ....

If I had a primary that was really hot, I'd be checking out my chain tension. HD's crappy auto tensioner is famous for running the chain too tight.

Well, the entire amount of metal between your legs acts as a heat sink, so if adding fuel cools the heads and pistons, everything else will be some cooler, too.

Yeah, the entire cases are going to be about 200°F on any given day. It's cool here today, not hardly in the 50's. I'll check with my IR gun when I venture out in a bit.

Ok so it sounds like a fair amount of heat is to be expected. But what about cool down time? My primary is still pretty hot well after the engine and pipes are cool.

It's going to be hot for a while. Think of a pot of boiling water, you shut the heat off and it will retain the heat forat least 30 minutes. Pipes are a thin piece of metal with no liquid inside to hold any heat so they cool off fast

That makes sense. However, when I say my primary stays hot for a while after a ride, I'm talking about several hours. Again, this may be perfectly normal for the new bikes but I have never experienced it on my previous rides......
