Default Polish stock wheels ?

I have a 07 Ultra with the stock wheels. I think they are Aluminum with black large spokes. I am ordering new tires and thought dressing it up a little so when I park it somewhere I can pick out of crowd with several bikes. Has anyone polished the stock wheels or just bought new custom wheels ? Personal opinions are welcome as well as pictures.

It would cost more to polish stock cast wagon wheels than they are even worth, not to mention maintainence. You will be lucky to get $100 each if you sold them on eBay. Go forged, go chrome. This link will give you some ideas.

Chrome that Hog @ $375 per wagon wheel + shipping 2 ways + bearings and you still have stock cast 16" wheels.

My dealer has a chrome exchange deal for $325/wheel. The chromer has ground off the nubs and polished and chromed the wheel. Or you can buy the HD chrome 9 spoke wheel for $530 less any discounts you can find, plus you keep your stock wheel. I'm going to do one of the above. I may do the front only first since you can't see much of the rear.

The up keep is not much once you learn how to do it. I have ploished wheels on my other bike. When I replace the tires I go ahead and redo the polishing while the wheels are off the bike. takes about a hour and they look almost like chrome again. While on the bike it takes about the same it takes to clean them normaly to keep them looking good. Remember I repolish while the wheels are off the bike but only clean while washing the bike. Now the polishing is a lot more. The black is a fit to get off as well as the clear coad on the other part. Then you have to sand each and every spoke to get out the roughness. It has to be done in stages. HD wheels can easily take a full day if you know what you are doing-experience- and then the supplies. 3 types of compounds a sisal wheel- most likely several to get the coating/paint off-several cotton wheels; at least 6 inche, I prefer the 8 inches. You need to maintain 7,200 rpms at the end of the wheel. A hand drill with 3,000 rpms and the 8 inch cotton whell is very close to 7,200 rpms. You need a couple of fiber wheels to remove the sanding marks out. Each compound has to have it's own wheel. You cannot use the same wheel with different compounds. Then if you are satisifed with they look then you have ot polish by hand using something like mothers billet polish. By the time you do all this with no experience you will have a couple of days work, very sore hands and fingures and about $300 in supplies.

Buy you a set of wheels and save yourself some problems or have them chromed. You will thank yourself for it in the long run.
