Be sure to visit the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley. Also, Hwy 209 from I-40 to Hot Springs is a great ~30 mile ride of twistys, elevation changes, and NO TRUCKS.
Just left there this past Sunday. When leaving Robbinsville headed to the Cherohala Skyway on route 143, the first mile or so has loose gravel all over it. Once thrugh that its clear riding. LOTS of law enforcement presence. I saw four Tenn. and one NC trropers on the dragon.
I'll be up there Tues-Thursday , try to make the BRP a yearly fall trip
Riding up to Independence , Va to Fox Creek Leathers , play a day and ride back.
I've heard the leaves are turnin up by Boone so it should be good , mornings in the high 40's so bring some warm clothes . Guess I'll get to test the heated seat /grips
I just got back from that area this Monday and had a great trip. I was on the Dragon Friday and did not see a single LEO. Did meet an 18 wheeler though. If you have the time HWY 129 down into Georgia is a great road also. The East end of the Skyway has several miles of slightly loose gravel on a hard bed. It was no problem to negotiate with a passenger on the backand lots of gear but I had to be really cautious. Had one of the best meals I've eaten on the square in downtown Murphy. It's like a 5star menu. Don't remember the name but it's the only resturant other than a diner. Octoberfest is going on in Helen Ga. lots of traffic. Pack the leathers causethe Skyway is friggin cold in the morning.
