Default tweeters

Want to add some small 1 inch tweeters to my sound system. Has anyone tried surface mounting them to the inner fairing closer in under the windshield? Any recommendations for which tweeters to use - seems like theres zillions of 'em....

Thanks

Gonna be putting them in my new inner fairing where the fairing mirrors were mounted. Do a search here for tweeters and you'll see some.

Yep - I've seen those which is what gave me the idea. Have not found what model tweeters folks have used, and have not seen anyone put them anywhere but where the fairing mirrors were. I would like to go closer in kinda above and just to the outside of the speedo and tach. There's about a 2" space there on the face and some molded bracing behind, so was thinking of a thin surface mount.....

Why not just buy some good point source 5-1/4 inch speakers and skip the holes, extra wires andtrouble.

I used Polk Audio in my 32 Vicky. They came mated to a 51/4" and included a seperate crossover. They could be flush or surface mounted.(included a spacer)Work best within 18" of the 5's Check Crutchfield. com they might show pictures

You could loose the air temp and volt meter gauges and move the oil pressure gauge up to where the volt meter gauge was and put them on either side of the radiolike this:

Ron,
Here's a copy and paste of the PM I sent to Dawg to help also.

<<First off you have to make sure the tweeters you choosewill stand up to the weather... a textile dome will get trashed....You'll need an aluminum mylar or silk/polymer dome. I got the tweeters at a local car audio specialty shop here in Pittsburgh. They carry Memphis Car Audio Stuff http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/They were $80. The model I got were the 15PRI's. They also have some good tweeters at Crutchfield http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sids8iOKLrM/App/Product/Group/ProductMenu.aspx?g=430&c=3&tp=107( All Polk's speakers are "marine certified" and they have " in-line" crossovers...no crossover boxes)

As far as wiring, it depends onhow the "crossover" is incorporatedwith the tweeters you choose. There are 2 types:

Ones that have an "in-line" crossover (No box)
And ones that have a separate little "crossover box" for each tweeter.

The tweeters with an 'in-line" crossover are simple to wire....Basically just "piggyback" the wires off of your present speakers. Positive to positive and ground to ground (negative) They'll work in addition with the main speakers and the simplest way to go.

The ones with the separate crossover are a little different. They have 2 wires goinginto eachcrossover box ( positive and ground)and 4 wires going out of each crossover box to eachspeaker (a pair of Low Frequency wires and a pair of High Frequency wires.)

I just wired the 2 wires that go into the crossoverbox right off the speaker terminals. Then I wired the pair of HF wires to the tweters and just taped off the LF pair of wires...That way you get full frequency to the main speakers and the component tweeters get the high frequency, and willwork in addtion tothe main speakers to "compliment" them. (( I got the "fullest" sound this way, Also Pez at Hogtunes reccomended it.))

<< You could also wire the 2 wires that go into the box separately to the radio's speaker wires (take them off the main speakers.) Then run the LF pair of wires out of the box the the main speaker and the HF pair of wires the tweeters. ( this cuts off the high frequency to the tweeter in the main speaker and only uses the component tweter)This alsohow the instructions will tell you how to wire them.>>

So,as per quote, is this the way to wire itwith the Polks that come with an inline crossover.........piggyback off the oem speaker wires? Thanks

As far as position, im lookin in to the same spot to the right/left of speedo/tach.........i think recessed it'll look pretty sharp and still keep the oem gauges.

This is great info - thanks!!

Has anyone figured out how to get some bass? I'm looking for something that is flat down to 50 or so that has definition. Most of the 5.25" speakers I have heard have very muddy bass.

Thanks!!!
