IDS problem

I must be missing something associated with this clatter deal. The only clatter I've ever heard from my 07 RK Custom is when I screw up and lug the motor.

lp - for president

Yes sir, you and most others as well. There is a clatter issue with a small precentage of the 07 touring production, but ask LP about it. He is not just a member of that club, He is the President

Damn, if LP gets to be prez of the Clatter Club, can I be prez of the Fence Sitters Union?
My '07 has no noticeable clatter, whine, or IDS but I'm probably going to install IDS anyway at the first rear tire replacement. Why?
Because I know that IDS (or "cush drive" or "isolastic", or whatever) actually does reduceharshness and noise caused by a drive system (chains) that must have a modest level of slop or thingsjust won't work.
How do I know? Because my old '69 Norton Commando had one too. Been there, done that. It's a good approach - just not absolutely necessary.
BTW - I'll bet the first IDS will wear out somewhere around 200K miles from now too. Bet a beer anyone?

I have a ???about this. I own an EGS and I do have chatter. It does not really bother me that bad, but being a perfectionist I wonder if the IDS would make me happy. I notice alot of guys talking about how smooth 6th gear is at 65mph, but I don't even shift into 6th until 65 + mph. This may sound stupid but does the IDS change any of the gearing characteristics of the stock bike?
Coming off an 04 fatboy with pipes, and cams high speed was painful, but the new stock bike is so sweet at highway speed I hate to mess it up.
Thanks
Installing the IDS all but eliminated the whine and this bike now is the smoothest riding bike at 60-65mph/6th gear I have ever owned.

I second what Oldhippie says: if you're on the fence, just do it. Never considered my bike to have any of the clatter issues, and decided to install the IDS anyway, just to see if there was any benefit. There is: the bike runs smoother and quieter in all gears. Don't care why or how, it just does. My .02 cents.
This whole BS story the dealer was telling you about the clatter was you must be lugging the motor. Well the owners manual says you should be able to shift into 6th gear at 55 mph. Well before the IDS install there was no way I could do that and apply any throttle without the "lugging" clatter kicking in. Now the damn thing works like it should. Installed price at Seminole Harley Davidson $327.00 plus my customer loyalty card got $32.70 in cash added to it.
They don't wear out...
My friend has over 150,000 miles on his Yamaha Road Star which comes stock with an IDS. Last time we checked it still looked like it just came out of the box.

Well you guys talked me into it.
I just got off phone with Cowboy in Austin. They are installing it today and I'll pick up my new RKC next Wed....And yep the labor is free!
Thanks for the info gents.
Coyboy sez they get asked about the IDS everyday

Having said that, forgive the following if it comes across as offensive in any way.
Did you guys (as a group) ever get to the bottom of how the 6-speed tranny actually works? I kept seeing reference to the "6th speed gearset cut" when in fact there is no 6th gear. The first 5 are actually double-reduction sets with the second reduction being the helical-cut pair driving the output sprocket. So 1st and 5th "gears" are actually a combination of straight- and helical-cut. But I guess this has already been figured out on the forums here...
