Default Cracked rear header???

Okay, this is a new one on me -- but after hearing it and thinking about it, it makes sense.

A friend of mine has a Road King and is considering new slip-ons. He has a friend who says that he ought to go ahead and do true duals because the rear headers always crack where they split into two pipes on the stock headers.

I've never heard of that before, but in a sense I can see where that might be a weakness... With the fixed pipes on the bike and the engine (Road King, Ultra, etc...) jiggling and vibrating like it does, it would seem there would be some stresses created on the headers.

Is that guy right -- or is he just tryin' to sell my friend more pipes???

It happens on occassion, but certainly not enough to consider new pipes as a precautionary measure!

Was this at a used car lot?

Next time you visit, if they bring it up again, as if you can borrow thier phone.... to call Bartso you can order a set of pipes from him!

L.O.L... Not sure if he was "being sold," but I just hadn't heard of that problem before.... I think he's just going to get the problem solved (temporarily) by having this set welded -- then look for options after that.

It does happen every now and then, but so do cracked swingarms. Maybe you should carry a spare in your saddlebag, just in case.

My stock head pipe had 54k on it when I took it off. It was still in good shape.

The pipe on my dads 06 Ultra cracked around 12,000 miles. The dealer that replaced it said they had seena handfull of late 05's and 06's come in with cracked pipes.

On my own bikes, since 1993 (Ive had 5) (on4 different dressers) Ive change 4 of them !
I can do this job in 1.5 hrs now :-)

MY 07 RG IS OK so far... 3500 miles since 5-07...

HD knows of this issue! They continue to make the same poor quality pipe..
That said... I ride no other mcy than HD !

Ive seen several cracked by Ham Handed Dealer (techs?) wrestleing the mufflers around while changing tires, yanking on a 32 in muffler is like using a prybar to put leverage on the Y pipe. I think only a small fraction of them crack on their own, improper muffler installation can put a great deal of stress on the Y pipe as well.
