replace hard with soft bags
Does anyone know if the "soft" bags from the Road King Classic or Custom will fit on a standard Road King in place of the hard bags? I have the full saddlebag guards and I'm not sure if the soft bags will fit on the bike without removing the guards. Has anyone tried this?
The bible says no, the guards won't fit the bags.
Also be aware that the bags contact the sidecovers and will rub the paint off a small area on the bottom edge of the cover. I don't know if that would be visible if/when sticking the hard bags on later.

First, the Touring bikes all use the same mounting brackets for the locking pins regardless of hard or soft bags. Also, they all use the samesupport rail dimensionallyon the bottom to support the bag though they vary depending on whether they have a chrome guard, chrome guard with side rails, etc.
So the fitment issue is whether the RK bags will fit in the space defined by the guard and rails.
You might try measuring your hard bags against the following dimensions taken from a RK Custom leather bag:
1. From the centerline of the rubber cushion that is on the bottom of the bag that sits on the support rail to the outside edge of the RK Custom bag is 3.75";
2. From the centerline of the forwardholeused for thelocking pin to the front edge of the RK Custom bag is 5.25"; and,
3. From the centerline of the rear hole used for the locking pin to the rear edge of the RK Custom bag is 11".

That was helpful.
Assuming the bags fit within the guards and they don't look terrible that way, I believe the Custom bags would be the choice since the guards will be in the way of the buckling mechanism on the Classic bags (not that I ever do anything with them myself; the straps just flap lazily in the wind, but you'd have to tuck them behind the guards).
